Home Window Replacement

When Should You Replace Your Windows?

Windows don’t last forever. While quality windows can serve your home for 20-30 years, age, weather, and wear eventually take their toll. If you’re experiencing any of these common warning signs, it may be time to consider replacement.

Drafts and Air LeaksDo you feel cold air near your windows even when they're fully closed? Drafts indicate that seals have failed or frames have warped, allowing conditioned air to escape and outside air to infiltrate. This drives up your heating and cooling costs every single day.

Difficult OperationWindows that stick, jam, refuse to stay open, or won't lock properly are more than an inconvenience—they're a safety and security concern. Warped frames, failed balances, and worn hardware make everyday operation a struggle.

Condensation Between PanesFoggy or hazy glass that you can't wipe clean indicates seal failure in double or triple-pane windows. The insulating gas has escaped, dramatically reducing your window's energy efficiency and clarity.

Rising Energy BillsIf your heating and cooling costs keep climbing despite consistent usage, inefficient windows may be the culprit. Single-pane windows, failed seals, and poor insulation allow energy to escape year-round.

Visible DeteriorationRotting wood frames, peeling paint, water stains around windows, cracked glass, or visible gaps between frames and walls are clear signs that your windows have reached the end of their useful life.

Excessive Outside NoiseCan you clearly hear traffic, neighbors, lawn equipment, or storms through your closed windows? Poor sound insulation affects your comfort and peace, especially in bedrooms and living areas.

What to Expect: Our Window Replacement Process

At Mainstream Home Improvement, we've refined our window replacement process over 23 years and thousands of installations. From your first call to your final walkthrough, we make the experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.

Step 1: Free In-Home Consultation

Your window replacement journey begins with a no-obligation consultation at your home. A Mainstream window specialist will:

• Evaluate your current windows and identify specific problems
• Discuss your goals, preferences, and budget
• Measure your window openings
• Show you product samples and options
• Provide a detailed written proposal with transparent pricing

What to expect: Your consultation typically takes 45-60 minutes. There's no high-pressure sales tactics—just honest information to help you make the best decision for your home.

Step 2: Product Selection & Custom Order

Once you've decided to move forward, we'll finalize your product selections:

• Window styles for each opening
• Exterior and interior colors
• Glass packages (Low-E options, specialty glass)
• Hardware finishes
• Grille patterns (if desired)

We'll take final precise measurements to ensure every window fits perfectly. Your custom Infinity® by Marvin® windows are then manufactured to your exact specifications—no "stock" sizes that require shimming or adjustment.

Typical timeline: Custom manufacturing takes 4-6 weeks depending on the season and product selections.

Step 3: Pre-Installation Preparation

Before installation day, we'll contact you to:

• Confirm your installation date and arrival time
• Provide preparation instructions
• Answer any remaining questions
• Verify access requirements

How to prepare: Clear a 3-foot area around each window, both inside and outside. Remove fragile items, window treatments, and anything that could be affected by the work. We'll provide a detailed checklist to make preparation easy.

Step 4: Professional Installation

On installation day, our factory-certified team arrives on schedule, ready to transform your home.

What happens during installation:

• Protection: We lay drop cloths and protect your floors, furniture, and landscaping
• Removal: Old windows are carefully removed and set aside for disposal
• Inspection: We inspect and prepare each opening, addressing any hidden issues
• Installation: New windows are precisely positioned, leveled, shimmed, and secured
• Sealing: Professional-grade insulation and weatherstripping ensure an airtight fit
• Finishing: Interior and exterior trim is installed or restored to complete the look
• Cleanup: We thoroughly clean each window and work area, inside and out

Timeline: Most window replacement projects are completed in 1-2 days, depending on the number of windows. We'll provide a specific estimate during your consultation.

Step 5: Final Walkthrough & Approval

Before we consider the job complete, our project manager conducts a thorough walkthrough with you:

• Every window is inspected for proper operation and appearance
• We demonstrate how to operate, clean, and maintain your new windows
• Any concerns are addressed immediately
• Your complete satisfaction is required before we leave

We don't rush this step. Your home is your biggest investment, and your satisfaction is our priority.

Step 6: Warranty Registration & Follow-Up

After installation, we handle the paperwork:

• Register your Infinity® Limited Lifetime Warranty with Marvin
• Provide warranty documentation for your records
• Schedule any follow-up service if needed
• Remain available for questions long after installation is complete

Our commitment: We stand behind every installation. If you have questions or concerns weeks, months, or years later, we're just a phone call away.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Window Replacement

Have questions about the window replacement process? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from Quad Cities homeowners.

View Our Complete FAQ

How long does window replacement take?

Most residential window replacement projects are completed in 1-2 days, depending on the number of windows being replaced and the complexity of the installation. During your consultation, we'll provide a specific timeline for your project. We work efficiently while never compromising on quality or attention to detail.

Do I need to be home during installation?

Yes, we recommend that an adult be present during the installation. Our team will need access to both interior and exterior areas of your home, and you'll want to be available for the final walkthrough and demonstration of your new windows. If you have scheduling constraints, let us know—we'll work with you to find a solution.

Can you replace windows in winter?

Absolutely! We install windows year-round throughout the Quad Cities. Our process is designed to minimize the time each window opening is exposed to the elements. We work on one window at a time, ensuring your home is never left open to the weather. In extremely cold conditions, we take additional precautions to maintain your comfort.

What happens to my old windows?

We handle everything. Your old windows, frames, and all installation debris are removed from your property and disposed of properly. When we leave, you won't have anything to clean up or haul away. Your home will be as clean as (or cleaner than) when we arrived.

How should I prepare for installation day?

We'll provide a detailed preparation checklist before your installation date. Generally, you should:

• Clear a 3-foot area around each window, inside and outside
• Remove window treatments (blinds, curtains, valances)
• Take down any fragile items or wall decorations near windows
• Ensure clear access for our crew to reach each window
• Make arrangements for pets to be secured away from work areas

Will installation damage my walls or trim?

Our installers are trained to work carefully and protect your home. In most cases, we can replace windows without disturbing your interior walls or trim. If any touch-up is needed, we'll address it before we leave. We treat your home with the same care we'd want in our own homes.

What warranty coverage do I receive?

Your Infinity® by Marvin® windows include a Limited Lifetime Warranty that covers glass, frame components, and hardware. Our installation workmanship is also warranted. We'll provide complete warranty documentation after your installation and handle all registration paperwork for you.

How do I clean and maintain my new windows?

Infinity® windows are designed for minimal maintenance. The proprietary acrylic finish resists fading, chalking, and staining—simply wipe with a damp cloth as needed. Double-hung and sliding windows feature tilt-in sashes that allow you to clean both sides of the glass from inside your home. We'll demonstrate all features during your final walkthrough.
